Adair is a town in Mayes County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 704 at the 2000 census. Named for two prominent Cherokee brothers, the town was established in 1883 and opened a Cherokee school. Adair is named after two Cherokee brothers, William Penn Adair and Dr. Walter Thompson Adair. In the 1880s, a Cherokee school was started, and opened up to white students around the time of Oklahoma statehood. Adair lies 10 miles north of Pryor, Oklahoma on U.S. Highway 69 in Mayes County, Oklahoma. with an elevation of 640 ft above sea level. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.5 square miles (11.7 kmē), all of it land. Adair sees more sunny days than the average U.S. city and a great deal less snowfall. Late spring is the wettest time of the year for the city, while winter is the driest.
