Allerton is a city in Wayne County, Iowa, United States. The population was 559 at the 2000 census. Bobwhite State Park is located just west of the town. Allerton is located at 40°42?26?N 93°22?2?W? / ?40.70722°N 93.36722°W? / 40.70722; -93.36722 (40.707108, -93.367263). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 square miles (3.0 km²), all of it land. Allerton was served by Iowa Highway 40 until it was turned over to Wayne County and made a county road. Allertion was a division point on the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad until the bankruptcy of the line in 1980. The old Golden State Route from Allerton through Fairfield was abandoned. There had been talk of relaying the track from Allerton to Seymour on the old Rock Island right of way to provide a connection between the IC&E and the Union Pacific. This idea has since been dropped due to the objections of the adjacent landowners. The remaining line is now known as...
