It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. Athens is located at 39°57?41?N 89°43?29?W? / ?39.96139°N 89.72472°W? / 39.96139; -89.72472 (39.961476, -89.724585). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.8 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,726 people, 695 households, and 462 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,175.4 people per square mile (453.3/km²). There were 740 housing units at an average density of 504.0/sq mi (194.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.26% White, 0.41% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.46% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races.
