Barneston is a village in Gage County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 122 at the 2000 census. The present-day town of Barneston was settled at the site of one of the largest Oto villages in the 1800s. The agency and a trading post were located there. Barneston was founded by a French fur traper who was married to an Oto woman. Barneston is located at 40°2?55?N 96°34?29?W? / ?40.04861°N 96.57472°W? / 40.04861; -96.57472 (40.048656, -96.574614). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 122 people, 49 households, and 31 families residing in the village. The population density was 515.9 people per square mile (196.3/km²). There were 57 housing units at an average density of 241.0/sq mi (91.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.18% White and 0.82% Native American.
