Circleville is a town in Piute County, Utah, United States. The population was 505 at the 2000 census. Circleville is located at 38°10?13?N 112°16?18?W? / ?38.17028°N 112.27167°W? / 38.17028; -112.27167 (38.170173, -112.271682). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.1 square miles (23.5 km²), all of it land. Circleville was originally settled in 1864. The town earned its name from local legends that identify it as the site of the first crop circle sightings in the Western United States during the 19th century. People at the time used them to confuse Gentile troublemakers by causing their horses to ride around in circles. Another theory for the name origin of the town is that the valley is completely circled by mountains except where the Sevier River goes in and out of the valley on the north and south.
